The Marienkirche was the only one of the six church buildings in the medieval twin city of Berlin-Cölln to survive the bombings of the Second World War without significant damage. It is therefore not only the best-preserved Gothic sacred space in the center of Berlin. In contrast to the nearby Nikolaikirche, for example, its enormous roof structure is still largely in its original late medieval state.
