"The art of engineering is ungrateful because one must possess knowledge in order to understand its beauty." This quote from the legendary Russian civil engineer Vladimir Grigoryevich Shukhov (1853-1939) summarizes in one sentence what motivated the authors Lorenz, May and Staroste to compile the first engineering guide for Berlin ( Ingenieurbauführer Berlin ) at the end of the 2010s; it was published in 2020.
Of course, it has a second characteristic: Civil engineering is unusual. You often don't see it at all. This provided the impetus to develop a second engineering guide project - the development of a website (and, based on this, a progressive web app for smartphones), with which visitors can go on an exploration tour in the center of Berlin and discover in selected buildings what made and makes great architecture possible in the first place: the often fascinating works of civil engineers hidden behind facades and roof cladding - the hidden structures.

First and foremost, the authors would like to thank Simone Claudia Hamm from the DFG priority program "Cultural Heritage Construction" for her tireless and highly committed work in developing the web design and creating the website. Our thanks also go to our project partner 3DIT in Dresden, where Lorenz Wieseke realized the preparation of the 3D building models for interactive use with the Govie Player developed there and bore our many change requests not provided for in the budget with equanimity.
We would also like to thank the team at Ingenieurbauführer Berlin - Wolfgang Bittner for the fantastic up-to-date photos of the selected buildings and their hidden constructions, as well as the then co-authors Hubert Staroste and Roland May for their support in the further procurement of material and their valuable critical and constructive comments.
We would like to thank all other contributors of information on individual objects, but above all the three institutions that made the project possible in the first place with their generous financial support: the Berlin State Monuments Office ( Landesdenkmalamt Berlin ), the Federal Chamber of Engineers ( Bundesingenieurkammer ) and, first of all, the Berlin Building Chamber ( Baukammer Berlin ) with its president Ralf Ruhnau and managing director Peter Traichel.
