history
Today, the Detlev Rohwedder House is the official residence of the Federal Minister of Finance. Not even a century old, it can already look back on a highly eventful history. Three very different political systems have left their mark.
It was built in 1935/36 for Hermann Göring’s newly founded Reich Aviation Ministry. Notwithstanding the heavy propaganda noise that accompanied the shell limestone-clad skeleton building, it was actually a project of superlatives in technical and logistical terms: with 2,100 offices, an underground car park for 250 cars, a floor space of 56,000 m² and a total of 6.8 km of corridors, the largest office building in Berlin at the time was built in just over a year.
